About us

St Matts is a community of lifelong disciples of Jesus engaging our world with grace and truth.

OUR VISION

A community:

At St Matts we call this place. We want people to find a place at St Matts and a place with Jesus. We look to actively participate in life together, encouraging and caring for one another. In a world that is increasingly individualised, with loneliness and aloneness abounding, we want to be truly there for one another. But we’re not an exclusive club. We are also passionate about welcoming people into our community and ensuring there is a place for all - no matter your background, beliefs or battle-scars.

Of Lifelong Disciples of Jesus:

We call this potential. We want people not just to reach their human potential, but to reach their God given potential, their potential in Christ. We are intentional about growing individually and together. We are thankful for God’s means of lavishing grace on us, and seek to walk in his grace that we may grow in his grace. And we’re not there yet. That’s why we’re lifelong disciples. We’re always learning. We’ve never arrived. We’re never perfect… until Jesus returns and makes us and all things new.

Engaging our world with Grace and Truth:

We call this purpose. We want to fulfil our purpose in Christ by being engaged in God’s greater purposes in the world. This involves a what and a how. Scope and Posture.

  • Scope:

The good news is that God is making all things new in Jesus. We want people to know Jesus because he brings meaning and hope into all of life, through forgiveness of sin and new life. Just as Jesus proclaimed and enacted his gospel with justice, mercy, compassion and forgiveness so we see our scope as encompassing the fullness of God’s vision for this world. How we go about these things, or our posture, matters a lot!

  • Posture:

We seek a posture of grace and truth. Grace and truth is how Jesus entered into the world. He wasn’t one or the other. He was full of both (John 1:14). We believe that while this posture is difficult to hold it is essential in a world that is often polarised and combative. We seek to lead with grace and embody truth in our networks and neighbourhoods as well as through our mission partners across the nations.

Let’s flesh that out:

St Matts has held services in this location since May, 1953. Since 1957 St Matts has had an emphasis on ministering to families. Our current building was opened in 1971, with the halls completed in 1988. Over all these years, St Matts has used its time, talents and treasures to promote the good news of Jesus. As we move into our future we are conscious of building on the wonderful legacies and intent of our past - that God’s eternal mission is best lived out in the time and culture we find ourselves.

Our history

Our heritage

Our congregations are made up of people from many denominational backgrounds. We are an Evangelical, Anglican, Contemporary church in the multicultural North West of Sydney. Each of these 4 things is important to us.

  1. Evangelical

Our authority for belief and practice is the word of God, the Bible. In it we discover that Jesus is supreme over all, dying in our place to secure our salvation and rising from the dead to demonstrate victory over death. He will return to judge all things and bring his eternal kingdom.

We further discover that the local church is the heartbeat of God’s mission in this world, empowered by God’s Holy Spirit.

  2. Anglican

St Matts is an Anglican Church in the Diocese of Sydney. Our corporate beliefs are expressed in the 39 articles. We affirm the Apostles and Nicene Creeds and value the Book of Common Prayer.

St Matts is governed by a Synod, Bishops, Senior Minister, Wardens and Parish Council. You can find more about Diocesan governance here.

  3. Contemporary

St Matts desires to take the timeless truths of God and make them accessible to people today without the need for a time machine. We believe that just as you can come to Jesus as you are, so you can come as you are to church. We seek to express the creativity of our loving creator in our services.

  4. Multicultural

St Matts is thankful for our long and ongoing ministry to Chinese speaking people. We believe our church family should be a microcosm off our broader community and look forward to seeing St Matts be a taste of the eternal church as described in Revelation 7:9-10.
