At St Matts, Jesus is who we are all about. We’re all about him, because he was first all about us and our world.
Jesus has intrigued, divided and even outraged people over millennia. We’re convinced that he came to show his extraordinary love and to provide direction, meaning and hope for a world and people often in crisis, confusion and despair.
Coming into our world as a humble baby over 2000 years ago, Jesus lived a fairly ordinary life in a normal Jewish family. He experienced the normal things that humans do - hunger, tiredness, pain and thirst. He had close friends who sometimes let him down. He was emotive about the things that mattered to him most.
Yet there was also something extraordinary about Jesus. He healed. He performed miracles. He ruled over nature. He taught with authority and power. He raised the dead. He claimed to bring God’s kingdom to earth. He declared forgiveness of sin.
The ordinary and extraordinary kissed on the weekend of Jesus’ death. His death came about because of human betrayal and jealousy. His death involved an ordinary means of crucifixion. Ordinary suffering. Ordinary burial. But as he died some extraordinary things took place as well. The earth was darkened in the middle of the afternoon. He pled for forgiveness for those whose actions had hung him on the cross. And most extraordinarily of all, he rose from the dead on the third day.
Extraordinarily, Jesus death on the cross was for the forgiveness not just of the sins of those in that time, but also for our sin. His rising to life was not just victory for him, but for those who trust in him.
We’d love you to get to know Jesus too.
We hope you do that through joining us as we live ordinary lives for Jesus that seek to declare the extraordinary truth about Jesus’ love each and every day.
